What’s meaning “Oshogatsu”?
it is the Japanese traditional new year anniversary.
But no one knows charm of it, so I would like to bring out it external of Japan.
In this video, I’d like to introduce you the state of the Ohgo Gion Matsuri Festival in Maebashi, Gunma.
But this festival is not a Oshogatsu’s event, but as I introduce various Japanese traditions, I think that the splendor of Oshogatsu also will be visible, so I’d like to introduce Japanese traditional events in general.
The Ohgo Gion Matsuri Festival was held in late July, 2019.
Its feature is that a big lion dance called “Abare-jishi”.
At the Ohgo Gion Matsuri Festival, various events such as Mikoshi, floats, and taiko are held over the two days of late July.
Then to conclude, a big lion dance “Shishimai” walks through the city.
The Lion has a scary face, right?
It is believed that Lion’s scary face has the power to dispel disasters due to the its fear.
In particular, the lion of this festival is called the “Abare-jishi”.
The origin of Abare-jishi is said to have been due to the disaster epidemic of Ohgo at the end of the Edo period, and Tenno-sama and Abare-jishi tried to get rid of disaster epidemic by walking around the town.

こちらの動画では、群馬県前橋市の大胡祇園まつりの様子を紹介します。
大きな獅子が舞うの様子が圧巻ですね。
皆さん新年明けましておめでとうございます、正に月だね、ミスターお正月です。
ミスター「おしょうがつ」、「おしょうがつ」とはどういう意味ですか？
それは「日本の伝統的な新年の記念日」を意味します。
しかし、誰もそれの魅力を知らないので、私はそれを海外の皆様に伝えようとしています。
この動画では、群馬県前橋市の大胡祇園まつりの様子をお届けします。
このお祭はお正月行事ではありませんが、様々な日本の伝統を紹介する中で、「お正月」の面白さも見えてくると思いますので、今後は日本の伝統行事を全般的に紹介していきたいと考えています。
大胡祇園まつりは７月下旬に開催されます。大きな獅子が舞うのが特徴です。
大胡祇園まつりでは、みこしや山車、太鼓など、様々なイベントが７月下旬の二日間に渡って行われ、
その最後の締めくくりとして、大きな獅子舞が街を練り歩きます。
獅子舞の獅子は怖い顔をしていますよね。
獅子には、その存在の怖さで、災いを吸い取ったり、払いのけたりする力があると信じられています。
特にこの大胡祇園まつりの獅子は「暴れ獅子」と呼ばれています。暴れ獅子の起源は、江戸時代末期に、大胡に疫病が流行し、天王様と暴れ獅子がまちを練り歩いてそれを駆除しようとしたことから、と言われています。
こうして暴れながら家々の厄を払いのけてるのです。
街の方のお話によれば、昔は今よりさらに過激な祭りでした。
家の軒先を破壊することもあったそうです。
なんてワイルドなエンターテインメントなんだ！

獅子の顔の赤い塗料は溶けやすく、子供たちは自分の顔にこの塗料を塗ります。このようにして邪気払いのために、獅子の力を借りようとしているんですね。
こうして過激に家々を回ったあと、獅子舞の顔はボロボロになります。
ボロボロになったこの顔は、毎年張り替えられるそうです。
年によって目の表情が違い、厳しい目は男性を表し、優しい目は女性を表すそうです。
果たしてジェンダーならどんな表情になるのでしょうか？
このまつりは、町を挙げて大きなスケールで行われる、日本の中でも珍しい行事です。
