【English】A Japanese traditional lion dance / at Umiterasu Nadachi in Niigata

In this video, I will introduce the state of interviewing Shishimai performed on Oshogatsu days.
The stage is “Umiterasu Nadachi” a roadside station in Niigata. It’s a prefecture next to Gunma prefecture where I live.
Hello everyone!
How are you today.
Just Oshogatsu,
Masa-ni-gatsu-da-ne,
I’m Mr.Oshogatsu.
Do you know Oshogatsu?
This is Japanese traditional culture that is not well known to the world.

And Shishimai is a traditional dance of Japan.
Shishimai has the meaning of a talisman, and Japanese perform Shishimai at happy times, including the Oshogatsu period.
The word “Shishimai” is Japanese meaning “Lion dance”, and it’s an event to dance by putting on a helmet with a lion motif.

But don’t you think this helmet doesn’t look like a lion at all?
Yes, there are no lions in acient Japan.
The image of this lion is said to have been transmitted from India to China and from China to Japan. But it’s said that it has not only these countries but also been transmitted from other countries.
In other words, the Japanese imitated the image of animals that they have never seen or heard, from foreign countries, and made it their own traditional culture.
Please remember.
Katsushika Hokusai also imagined a waterfall he have never seen or heard, and the work has been evaluated around the world.
The potential of the Japanese may be in these imagination.

Each region has various own Shishimai.
As I interviewed various styles of Shishimai, I plan to release it in future videos.
You’d see the diversity of traditional Japanese culture in these.

This time, the people who cooperated us are the roadside station in Niigata “Umiterasu Nadachi”, and members of the traditional culture preservation society.
“Umiterasu Nadachi” is a comprehensive leisure facility where you can enjoy a hot spring with an aquarium, an inland swimming pool using seawater and delicious seafood.
I have not got a dollar for advertising from them, but their facilities are my favorites. So I strongly recommended it.
How about using it when you come to Japan?
By the way, I, “Mr. Oshogatsu” launched an EC site.
Everyone from overseas is also a check!
This program brought to you by Mr.Oshogatsu.
Masa-ni-gatsu-da-ne, I am Mr.Oshogatsu.
See you again next time.
